Failure analysis and testing

Extensive experience and knowledge exists at MBE in various kinds of damage analysis and testing. When an accident or mishap occurs, it is often necessary to obtain a reasonable explanation of what went wrong and to distinguish between cause and effect. This knowledge can be used for preventive measures. The opinion of an independent third person is often needed, and in these cases the specialist knowledge of MBE staff can help.

At MBE, service is provided for analysis to damage caused by corrosion or when a material breaks. In addition, in some cases tests are performed which are based on predicting whether or not a certain material is suitable for a given use.  For MBE, it is very important that damage analysis tasks are concluded with detailed reports.

The following factors are used in failure research:

  • Examination of fracture surfaces, using stereomicroscopes and electron microscopes
  • Chemical analysis of metals and corrosion products
  • Microscopic analysis of the construction of the material
  • Standardized tests on the properties of the material.

The Materials, Biotechnology and Energy Department has equipment for performing various tests on metals, polymers and other materials. Tests are also carried out on off-the-shelf products to assess whether they fulfil specific requirements. 

Measurements made include the following:

  • Tensile strength
  • Compressive strength
  • Rigidity
  • Hardness
  • Impact resistance
  • Corrosion resistance
  • Specific gravity
  • Water absorption
